NBA Live 18: Game Play Sliders – Oct 2017 – Updated 10/06

Image104

I’ve been experimenting for the last few weeks, turning up all sliders to 100, and then all the zero and tuning them, these current ones are the ones that I tuned from 100-0, and I think they work out pretty fine in terms of overall game play balance vs the CPU and flow of the game. Don’t be skeptical about having the shooting higher than 50, shot contests and shot blocking ensure that its balanced, in games that I’ve played. You can always adjust.

*UPDATED: 10/06 after the patch.

I’ve noticed that some of the sliders affect CPU tendencies, so I tried to make adjustments so that they run the offense their more balanced. When they attack the rim they pass out more after collapsing the defense. I’ve noticed a lot more passing plays happening by the CPU with these. The shooting percentages might be a bit high, but I think overall flow is better. I’ll still be testing on reducing percentages, but the games have been fun, and that’s all I care about at the moment. Check below for the Cavs vs Celtics game.

Minutes: 6-8 Minute Quarters
Auto Subs: On
Difficulty: All Star
Game Speed: 81

USER/CPU are the same unless stated otherwise

Inside shooting: 60/30
Med Range: 60
Three-point shooting: 50
Free throw: 50
Post shooting: 50
Lay up: 100
Post move: 90
Dunk Frequency: 90
Reach in Fouls: 0/10*
Jump Shot Fouls: 50
Post Shot Fouls: 50
Lay Up Fouls: 50
Dunk Fouls: 50
Offensive Air: 100
Offensive Ground: 100
Defensive Air: 100
Defensive Ground: 100
Steal Success: 50
Alley-Oop: 50
Shots off Dribble: 70
Shot Contest: 80
Shot Blocking: 60
Offensive Rebounding: 10/0
Off-Ball Push: 100
Off-Ball Jostle: 100
Jostle vs Blow-by: 50
Dribble Move: 50

*My reason for putting reach-in fouls to zero is because it causes a handicap on defense, they don’t want you to reach in the game, and when you do, they punish you for trying to steal the ball, even when the ball is right in front of you for the taking. I believe it needs to be fixed, when you turn it down to zero, you can crowd the defender, just like how you can in Live Run. If you feel it’s wrong, turn down the steal sliders below 50, if you reach, you can still get caught out of position. Best way to play defense use the right stick while you move and follow the arrow (at your feet) to slow down the offensive player.

Here’s the shot chart from the game played between the Pacers and Hawks: CPU is the Hawks, they shot 41% with these sliders. The dev team, you can tell, is trying to fix the CPU heading for the paint glitch, there has been a lot of mid-range jumpers being taken now by the CPU.

CELTICS vs CAVS GAME PLAY: POST PATCH UPDATE -10/06

NBA LIVE 18: Let’s Get Rid of Defensive Assist Button

September 7, 2017 Leave a comment

NBA LIVE 18 DEMO (51)

I believe the defensive assist button is useless this year since you can play solid on ball defense. Rather than having a button to help keep the defender in front of the offensive player, I think it would be more useful for an aggressive defensive stance or defensive modifier. The off-ball controls for it is fine, especially for Live Run, to play keep away, but for mono e mono, to me, it just feels useless. The way NHL uses the LT trigger for manual back skating (if you have auto-back skate turned off), enables you to maneuver way better on defense. When you get beat by the offensive player you would release the trigger and your controlled player turns around by your control. It could also be used to switch up your defensive position as well if you want to force the offensive player one way. NBA Live is too contextual in that part of the game, but if it were more user controlled, it could make defense more challenging, but rewarding at the same time, in my opinion. More ways to give the user control is always a good thing.

Also, another idea for defensive controls, you should be able to use the D-pad to communicate on defense. For instance, the current controls are just set for defensive quick formations, but what if you had controls to communicate with your teammates on the fly, defensively. The LT would modify defensive controls on the D-pad and you can tell the closest defender what to do. You want him to slip the pick? You want your teammate to send the defender baseline or to the middle etc. It would be good for the created player mode, if anything just to keep the user engaged on what’s happening on the floor, rather than just sitting in the corner guarding your assignment.

What do you think?

NBA LIVE 18: Some Ideas for Improving Game Play

August 17, 2017 Leave a comment

NBA LIVE 18 DEMO (7)

  1. Tone down the rebound dunks
    1. I’ve adjusted the sliders and it seemed to tone it down
  2. Free throw
    1. Window MAY be too short
    2. I think you can reduce the speed of the shot meter for better shooters
  3. Torpedo standing dunk
    1. Seems to be unstoppable
    2. There’s no gather before it which makes it annoying
    3. It gets the crowd fired up, but its UGLY
    4. There’s always an ugly dunk in Live, I would rather see an off the glass lay up
  4. Dribbling
    1. Automatic size up should be user triggered, if it’s going to be contextual, shorten the window a bit more for it to trigger. I think this would help when having a mismatch
    2. I’m still not a fan of doing the half circle motion for behind the back dribbles. I would rather have the control switched for the step back dribble
  5. Setting screens
    1. At times the screener doesn’t even screen the defender, or the screen is so weak that it allows the defender to easily go above the screen into the ball handler.
  6. Hand Up animations on the right stick
    1. It’s too slow to trigger at times
    2. I’d suggest changing its usage in the future to be more stance based with the LT button to manually crowd the defender or cut off the ball handler. Just an idea.
    3. Takes too long for defender to get their hand up when pressing up on the RS (might have been tweaked?)
  7. Sliding (mainly on defense)
    1. Fixable problem, it was tuned properly in Live 16, but these players are wearing sneakers, we should be able to stop on a dime no matter what we are doing on the floor.
    2. Might be a momentum issue that needs to be tweaked
    3. I still would want player movement sliders in future games (Like NHL series)
  8. Boxing out
    1. Would like to see more boxing out in the paint, players should be looking for a body when the shot goes up, even though NBA Player don’t like to box out
    2. Put backs are pre-determined, need more ways to cancel it out. Maybe have tap backs (If they’re in the game I haven’t seen one yet)
  9. Big men breaking down defenders from the perimeter
    1. Tristan Thompson and KLove can some how get into the lane from the three-point line and dunk on my whole team.
  10. Blocks
    1. Some of the blocks are too hard hitting. The ones that fly out of bounds especially. Need to have more loose ball situations rather than have a ball sail out of bounds giving the offensive team another possession.
    2. Kevin Love’s block rating might be too high (he shouldn’t be pinning my shot off the glass). Some of those animations should be reserved for certain big men. Maybe add them as defensive signature blocks.
  11. Need to reduce And1’s
    1. It’s too easy to get and1’s, it’s almost like it’s guaranteed to go in.
    2. NBA Live 09 had a slider for the ability to make tough finishes, something like that would be ideal. (I still need to experience this on 8 min quarters as the game tends to balance itself out)
  12. Celebrations
    1. Allow players to trigger celebrations like in Live Run
    2. Certain celebrations should be only for certain type of players
    3. More flamboyant, cocky players should only have the outrageous celebrations
  13. Automatic reach in fouls
    1. Should only happen when a person is excessively pressing the button to reach-in
    2. Feels like bail out calls, especially when you feel you timed it right for the steal.
  14. Live Run
    1. Give penalties for players that don’t spread the floor properly. Too many players chase the ball handler
    2. Slow down the game play, JUST a little bit
  15. Shot Clock glitch
    1. You get a shot clock violation even when you get the shot off on time (this was a problem in Live 16 also). The timing is off. If you shoot the ball under a second, its a violation.

*Note, these are things that I’ve noticed when playing that happened in the game with sliders adjustments and non-slider adjustments*

Some additional requests long-term requests

  1. Replays between quarters look terrible slow paced, would rather see those in real time, the majority of the time. Only time they should be slowed down is when showing the highlight
  2. We desperately need between quarter adjustments for match ups, line up changes, and general coaching changes. A way to implement it is to put a time out before quarters so you can make those changes.

I’ll have more but I think the list is pretty extensive from what I’ve experience in playing the demo.

Bad News: Game Pushed Back October 28th

Open Letter 3:

Hey everybody,

If you’re anything like me, after following all of the storylines leading up to this year’s NBA Draft, a really entertaining NBA Summer League and all the other basketball news this summer, you’re excited for the upcoming 2014-15 NBA season.  It should be amazing.

The team has been pushing hard all year to make NBA LIVE 15 both look and play great, and I couldn’t be prouder of the work they’ve done. You may have seen a few early preview pieces pop up from our visits with press or our recent trip to Gamescom, and we’ve been getting some great feedback from our conversations with the media, as well as from all of the play testing we’ve been doing over the last few months.

It was great to see such a positive response to our Visuals Trailer that we released last week. We think we’ve come a long way since the launches of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 last November, and we’re still working on tuning certain areas in 5-on-5 gameplay.  The team took on an incredible amount of work this year literally touching every single system in gameplay, focusing on providing improved control and responsiveness, as well as animation that both looks and feels great.  That will be our calling card moving forward.

Considering all the work that’s gone in so far, we will be taking a few extra weeks to polish the game and make sure you get an incredible NBA experience from the moment you first boot up the title.  This extra development time means we will be moving our launch date to October 28 to line up to opening night of the 2014-15 NBA season. This was a hard decision, but it’s the right one, as we are totally committed to delivering the highest-quality game we possibly can. You’ll be hearing a lot more from us over the coming weeks, starting with a brand-new gameplay blog that will give you the first details on all the ways we plan to deliver on our promises to build a better experience.

As I said, we’re very proud of the improvements we’ve made in NBA LIVE 15, and we believe with some additional time, our game will reach its full potential.

We’ll also be providing additional blogs, videos, deep-dives and more in the coming weeks as the game comes together and we prepare for launch.  And as always, I encourage all of you to make up your minds and see for yourself by playing the trial when it becomes available closer to launch.

Disappointed Yes, because as a Live backer, I’m getting real tired of the excuses, Hopefully, this doesn’t come back to bite em, because they’ve had enough chances – TLK
